Random facts and numbers #1

1. With a 10' head of a pressure, a 1/16" diameter drain hole will produce a water flow rate of 15 gallons per hour. (but you knew this, no?)

2. More people are killed every year by falling coconuts (~ 150) than  by shark attack (~10) (did you know that?)

3. The lock gates on the Panama Canal are the original ones placed in 1914. The tallest ones, at the Miraflores locks, weigh 665 tons each (the hinges alone weigh almost 17 tons each).

4. Ships proceed through the canal and the locks under their own power. Once in the locks they are secured, fore and aft, by pairs of heavy-duty electric trams called 'mules' using heavy steel cables. The mules do not pull the ships through the locks, but only maintain tension in the cables to keep the ship centered in the lock to avoid striking and damaging the lock structure.
