Well, the honeymoon had to come to an end sometime, and it did so last night. As I noted, the mattress was hard. Really hard. But actually sleeping on it was like nothing I had ever experienced. No give whatsoever. Kept waking up with my hands numb and tingling (a mix of a little carpal tunnel plus probably a bit of arthritis in the neck) needing to change position. At around 10:00 pm it seems every dog in the region decided to howl and shriek; sounded like quite a few cats joined the orchestra as well. This lasted about a half hour then went quiet. Intermittently strong winds howled through the valley and the house. Around midnight a bunch of roosters started to predict the sunrise 5 hours in advance (I really hate roosters). This also lasted for another half hour then quiet (aside from the wind). 2 am dogs again. 5 am roosters again. Windy. Numb hands.
